Essential Garage Door Safety Tips Every Family Should Know
5 min read Mike Johnson
Your garage door is the largest moving object in your home, weighing 150 to 400 pounds or more. While modern garage doors are equipped with multiple safety features, accidents still occur, many of them preventable. As Palm Desert's trusted garage door experts, we've compiled essential safety information that every family should know.
Understanding the Risks
Before diving into safety tips, it's important to understand why garage door safety matters. Garage door-related injuries send thousands of people to emergency rooms each year. The most common injuries include fingers and hands caught in door sections as they close, injuries from falling doors when springs break, children struck by closing doors, and injuries from attempting DIY repairs on high-tension components.
The good news is that most of these injuries are preventable with proper education, regular maintenance, and functioning safety devices.
Essential Safety Features and Testing
Modern garage doors are required to have two key safety features: photo-eye sensors and auto-reverse functionality. Understanding and testing these features is crucial for your family's safety.
Photo-eye sensors are the small devices mounted near the floor on either side of your garage door opening. They project an invisible beam across the doorway. If anything breaks this beam while the door is closing, the door should immediately stop and reverse. To test this feature, start closing your door and wave a broomstick or your foot through the beam. The door should immediately reverse.
Auto-reverse is a feature that causes the door to reverse if it encounters resistance while closing. To test this feature, place a 2x4 flat on the ground in the door's path. When the door touches the board, it should immediately reverse. If your door doesn't have these features or they're not working correctly, contact us immediately for service.
Teaching Children About Garage Door Safety
Children are naturally curious, and garage doors can be fascinating to them. It's essential to teach kids these safety rules from an early age. First, the garage door is not a toy, wall buttons and remotes are for adults only. Second, never run under a moving door, even if it seems like there's enough time. Third, keep fingers and hands away from door sections, especially where panels meet. Fourth, never touch or play with the springs, cables, or other hardware. Fifth, if the door starts to close while you're in the garage, don't try to race under it, wait for it to fully close and reopen it.
Consider placing the wall button at a height where young children can't reach it, and never leave remotes where children can access them.
Monthly Safety Checks You Should Perform
A few minutes of inspection each month can prevent accidents and catch problems early. First, do a visual inspection by looking at the springs, cables, pulleys, and rollers for signs of wear or damage. Don't touch high-tension components, but note any visible fraying, rust, or loose parts.
Second, test the balance. Disconnect the opener (pull the release cord) and manually lift the door halfway. A properly balanced door should stay in place. If it falls or rises, the springs need adjustment by a professional.
Third, test the safety features using the photo-eye and auto-reverse tests described above. Fourth, listen and observe by running the door through a complete cycle while watching and listening for unusual sounds or movements. Grinding, scraping, or jerky movement indicates a problem.
What to Do in an Emergency
Despite our best efforts, emergencies can happen. Here's what to do in various scenarios. If a person is trapped under the door, do not try to lift the door manually if it's connected to the opener. Pull the emergency release cord (usually red) to disconnect the opener, then carefully lift the door.
If the door won't close, first check for obstructions in the photo-eye sensors and clean the lenses. If that doesn't work, you can usually force the door closed using the wall button (hold it continuously). But remember, this overrides the safety features, so make absolutely certain nothing is in the door's path.
If you hear a loud bang, a loud bang often indicates a broken spring. Do not attempt to operate the door, it could fall or move unpredictably. Call for professional service immediately.
Professional Maintenance Is Essential
While monthly checks and proper usage are important, they're no substitute for professional maintenance. We recommend annual professional service to ensure all components are in safe working condition, safety features are properly calibrated, springs and cables are intact and properly tensioned, the opener is functioning correctly, and weather sealing is adequate.
Professional technicians have the training and tools to safely inspect and service high-tension components that are dangerous for homeowners to handle.
